Someone is after Starters like Callie and Michael—teens with chips in their brains. They want to experiment on anyone left over from Prime Destinations—Starters who can be controlled and manipulated. With the body bank destroyed, Callie no longer has to rent herself out to creepy Enders. But Enders can still get inside her mind and make her do things she doesn’t want to do. Like hurt someone she loves. Having the chip removed could save her life—but it could also silence the voice in her head that might belong to her father. Callie has flashes of her ex-renter Helena’s memories, too . . . and the Old Man is back, filling her with fear. Who is real and who is masquerading in a teen body?
No one is ever who they appear to be, not even the Old Man. Determined to find out who he really is and grasping at the hope of a normal life for herself and her younger brother, Callie is ready to fight for the truth. Even if it kills her.
Callie, her younger brother Tyler, and her best friend Michael finally have a safe life thanks to the inheritance that Callie has received from Helena. However, not only can she still hear Old Man in her head, he can remotely explode the chip in her head if he so chooses. Furthermore, Callie soon finds out that the she is a target because of her modified chip, which has the ability to keep her awake and conscious when someone controls it. This is lethal, for she can be used as terrorist weapon. As she cannot remove the chip, the only way Callie can live safely is to find the Old Man and stop him for good.
Hyden claims he is The Old Man’s son. Although Hyden helped develop the chips, he opposes his father’s work. Hyden is a likable figure. He is a leader and a genius with a kind heart. I love how he and Callie work together to try to save the Metals, Starters who have the chips implanted in their heads, as well as seeing their relationship develop. I also love how Callie grows strong in this book—into someone who can protect her family and friends. Unfortunately, the other characters aren’t as developed. I especially wish that we got to learn more about Michael.
The plot is fast-paced with unpredictable twists and turns at the end. It’s not as intense as Starters or thrillers where I absolutely could not put the book down, but it has a solid conclusion. It was difficult to put down this book because of the the constant action and the need to know what happens. Overall, I like the book recommend it to readers who enjoy sci-fi and dystopian novels.

Author: alice
Alice is a stay-at-home mom of two children. Her favorite books are those send icy tingles down her spine, such as a good mystery or thriller, but she also enjoys a good hear-throbbing romance. She enjoys listening to music and drinking a cup of tea while reading and working.
