“Will you really read all of those books?”
“Yes, mom,” I said. I peered around the tall stack of books, balanced precariously in my arms, as I took a tentative step towards the library doors.
Ten years later
Confession: I didn’t read every single book that Teen Me checked out from the library, but I almost always did. I loved the idea of exploring all those worlds and made a valiant attempt to fast read. Sometimes, I devoured as many as three books in a single day.
As my studies, then my job, took more of my time, I began frequenting the library less often. Instead, I found other ways to fulfill my book-loving soul.
Following include twelve signs to identify a bibliophile.
12 Signs to Identify a Bibliophile
- Asks for books, never chocolates or flowers, on Valentine’s Day.
- Adds books faster than they can read them to their To Be Read list.
- Checks out huge stacks of books from the library.
- Counts down the days to their latest anticipated book release.
- Frequents the used and independent bookstores in the area.
- Finds some way (always) to turn the conversation to books.
- Majors in English.
- Met their significant other at a bookish event or location. (Or their friends predict this will happen.)
- Talks to fictional characters, who have set up permanent residence in their head.
- Tells the driver to pull over when they spy a bookstore, or even better, a book sale.
- Reads books from the professor’s supplemental or suggested reading list.
- Works in a reading or writing-related job. (Or would in their ideal world.)

All of these are a 100% accurate. π Especially the first one. Like who needs chocolate, when you’ve books?
Crystal (Kester) says
Yes! Who needs chocolate when we have books?
Cam @ Camillea Reads says
Oooooh secondhand bookstores are my magical place! My husband and I did met because of literature! Poetry, to be exact π
Crystal (Kester) says
Nice! Yes, secondhand bookstores are magical β¨

Great list! Most of it is totally relatable except I didn’t major in English π Although right now I’m seriously contemplating going back to school (yet again!) and doing another degree related to books! Maybe a librarian? Working with books in any capacity would be amazing! Haha and YES to getting books for Valentine’s Day π That’s definitely the ultimate ILY for me!

I have friends who love to read and write, but did another major π That would be so cool! I have a friend who works in a library, and I love listening about her work. I know it has its own challenges like any other job, but it’d be great to be around books all day. I agree. Few things tell bibliophiles “I love you” like buying them books. β€οΈ

Yess for huge stacks of books from the library! Somehow I always find myself walking out with way more books than I could ever read in two weeks, even though I tell myself not to get so many every single time, haha.

Same here. Sometimes I have to return books without having read them. But a girl can dream!
Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight says
These are just so TRUE! Like I have spent way too many hours curating my TBR, no question. And I ALWAYS ask for books for any and all holidays. My mom is like “I don’t want to buy you more books!” and I am like but…. books!
Crystal (Kester) says
I love looking over my wishlist and dreaming about all the books I’m going to read one day. And yes to asking for books. I just can’t think of anything else I want people to buy me. I think my mom can relate to your mom. My mom keeps asking me when I’m going to sell more books π

It’s so much fun reading all of these! YES for #11- I thought I was the only one who sneaks behind the teacher’s desk to peek at the books they have and actually read the textbooks cover to cover! Also totally agree with #9- “no, mother, I’m not schizophrenic, I just love pretending to talk with my favorite characters!” LOL

Yes, it’s been so much fun reading everyone’s response!

Great list! Books make a much better gift than just about anything, don’t they? π
Crystal (Kester) says
Yes! Books make the best gifts π

This is really funny because I relate with at least 3/12 of the items in the list. I wanted to major in English before entering college, but decided to pursue another degree that would instead be more focused on law. But I am definitely still going to minor in English! π I also check huge stacks in the bookstore when I have the time and when I was young, I loved to add more books to my TBR pile. Loved this post!

Crystal (Kester) says
It’s great that you’ll minor in English! I started out with a minor in English, but bumped it to a major.
Sammie @ The Writerly Way says
So many of these are so true! I actually started working at a library last year, and it was basically a dream come true. :3 Books are definitely soooo much better than chocolates or flowers. Any husband (or potential husband) should know that. π
Here’s my TTT post.

It’s wonderful that you get to work around books! And yes, nothing tells bibliophiles “I love you” like buying them a book! π
Emily Nicholas says
So relatable. I am loving reading everyone’s lists on this topic this week. I check out way too much from my library!

It’s wonderful how we find multiple things with which we can relate on everyone’s lists! I love this weeks’ TTT π
Sam@wlabb says
I am so guilty of #2. I am always “grooming” my TBR, but also obsessing over my ratio of adds to read. I am curious about my habit. If I had known that I would never work in my field (chem engineering), I would have picked a field for love, like library science. It would be wonderful to do bookish things all day.
Crystal (Kester) says
Same here. I keep moving books on and off my wishlist. I add books I don’t think I’ll get around to reading, and I don’t add books that I KNOW I’ll read.
Lydia says
I check out huge stacks of books from the library, too.
