Following are 10 books on my TBR that will be released in the second half of 2019. I’m especially excited for The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black, The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman, and Starsight by Brandon Sanderson. What books are on your watchlist?

Assassin’s Apprentice: Illustrated Edition by Robin Hobb
Expected publication date: 10/01
I love the Farseer trilogy and am looking forward to this special anniversary edition.
The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang
Expected publication date: 08/06
I like this book better than The Poppy War, and the cover is gorgeous. I don’t agree with everything in this book but I do believe it has worth in providing another perspective on modern historical events. Note: there is triggering content in this book, including language dropped in heaping quantities, war horrors, and a negative attitude towards the book’s equivalent of Christianity.
Of Wars, and Memories, and Starlight by Aliette de Bodard
Expected publication date: 09/2019
I haven’t read anything from this author before, but the universe she’s created for her stories is fascinating. Plus, I love the cover to this anthology!
The Rise of Kiyoshi by F.C. Yee
Expected publication date: 07/16
I’ve heard great things about F.C. Yee’s Genie Lo books. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with Kiyoshi’s story. And to this new expansion of the Avatar: The Last Airbender world.
Sailor Moon Eternal Edition Vol. 6
Expected publication date: 10/22
I loved Sailor Moon as a child. These new covers are gorgeous and the paper quality is fantastic.
The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black
Expected publication date: 11/19
The Wicked King was all I wanted and more from book 2 in this series. I’m looking forward to seeing how Holly Black concludes it all in TQoN!
The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman
Expected publication date: 10/03
I loved Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy growing up. I enjoyed La Belle Sauvage and am especially looking forward to this next installment in the Book of Dust because because it features a grown Lyra.
Starsight by Brandon Sanderson
Expected publication date: 11/05
Skyward is a fantastic book (read my review here). The big reveal at the end has me eager to see where he takes us next with Starsight!
The Toll by Neal Shusterman
Expected publication date: 11/05
I loved how Scythe explores the implications of (pretty much) eternal life – read my review here. I still need to read book 2, but book 3 is on my radar!
White Sand Volume 3 by Brandon Sanderson
Expected publication: 09/10
I enjoy Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere books.

What books are you anticipating in the second half of 2019? Are any of these on your list?
Natalie Aguirre says
Can’t wait for Holly Black’s book too but I need to catch up and read book too. Phillip Pullman’s book looks good too.
Crystal says
I hope you enjoy The Wicked King, Natalie. The ending left me highly anticipating book three! I’m also excited for Philip Pullman’s book since I love His Dark Materials!
Dani @ Perspective of a Writer says
The Dragon Republic and The Queen of Nothing are on my list too!! I recently read The Poppy War with a buddy and was fascinated at how differently we saw some events. I need to read The Wicked King ASAP to prepare for TQON!! I really enjoyed The Cruel Prince and adore the fae!! ❤️
Crystal says
It’s interesting how two people can view the same event differently. The Poppy War raises some great questions about historical events and how war influences people at different levels (from individuals in different positions of power to society as a whole and even on an international scale). I love Holly Black’s take on the fae <3 I hope you enjoy The Wicked King. After that ending, I need to read TQoN to find out what's going to become of Cardan and Jude and everyone else.
Kristen @ Metaphors and Moonlight says
I had not heard of some of these, but they look cool! If the last book in the Holly Black series is coming out, I guess I’ll just be able to binge read all three since I still haven’t gotten around to starting lol. I’m looking forward to that though!
Crystal says
Oh nice. I wish I could binge read through the Holly Black series. Each book has ended with a twist that made me wish the next book had been available for me to read right away!
Janina says
I’m so giddy and excited that you mentioned The Rise of Kyoshi! It’s one of my most anticipated books of the year as well and I’m stoked to dive even deeper into the Avatar world!
Crystal says
Glad to meet another Avatar fan! 🙂 Would love to hear your thoughts on Kiyoshi once you read it. Now to wait on the release 🙂
Sam@wlabb says
I really enjoyed the first Genie Lo book by Yee, and may have to check out Kyoshi.
Crystal says
I haven’t read the first Genie Lo book yet, but it’s on my TBR! I hope you enjoy Kiyoshi if you pick it up, Sam!
Sophia Rose says
The new Brandon Sanderson looks good. Actually, you’ve got a few I will eventually want to read when I get caught up on their older books. Looks like you’ll have some fab reads for the last half of the year.
Crystal says
Thanks, Sophia. I’m really looking forward to these books. I hope you enjoy the ones that you have on your TBR list! 🙂
Nicoline says
What! Will there be an illustrated edition of Assassin’s Apprentice?! I loved the first two books. I still have the third left but I am positive that i will enjoy it as well. Have you also read The Fitz and The Fool Trilogy?
Crystal says
So happy to find another Robin Hobb fan! ❤️ I’ve read the Farseer trilogy and Tawny Man trilogy but have yet to read The Fitz and The Fool trilogy. I decided to go back and read Liveship Traders (which I skipped to get more Fitz and the Fool together 🙈) and then Rain Wild Chronicles first. I feel like I missed out on a lot of the political tensions and other context in the Tawny Man trilogy because I went straight into it without first reading Liveship Traders.

So many good books on here! The Toll is on my list, too! Wow, I forgot that Starsight was coming out this year, and I still haven’t read Skyward, even though I bought it last year. xD What have I been doing with my life?! I’m so ready for The Queen of Nothing, too! Need me some more Cardan, please.
Here’s my TTT post.
Crystal says
I’m guilty of having books sit on my book for a year (or more!) before I get around to them. Skyward is fantastic. I’m super hyped for Starsight 🙂 I totally agree that we need more Cardan. I’m curious to see what he’ll do next and what will happen between him and Jude now!
Lydia says
I didn’t know Phillip Pullman had a new book coming out. Neat!
My TTT.
Crystal says
I was so happy to find out about Pullman’s new book. I love His Dark Materials! 🙂
Melliane says
Oh many new ones to me there!!!
Crystal says
I hope you find a new book to love from this list, Melliane! 🙂
ShootingStarsMag says
I still need to read Thunderhead, but I love the cover for the Toll.
