Today, I have for you my review and a giveaway as a part of the tour for Rachel McClellan’s Fractured Light.
3 Stars: A Good Read
Series: Fractured Light #1
Hardback: 304 Pages
Publication: February 8, 2012 by Sweetwater
Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. She can’t take any chances. But when she starts to make friends for the first time in her life, she gets careless and lets her guard down. Big mistake.
As an Aura, Llona can manipulate light and harness its energy. But if she wants to survive, Llona will have to defy the Auran Council and learn to use her power as a weapon against the Vyken whose sole desire is to take her light. Now she’s caught in something even bigger than she can understand, with a power she can’t wield, and no one she can trust, except, just maybe, a mysterious stranger.
I like the concept of Auras and Vykens. I admire authors who come up with new abilities for people with supernatural powers. And even if elemental powers isn’t something new, Rachel McClellan comes up with her own lore and concepts for Auras.
I have mixed feelings about the characters. At first, Llona wants to blend in, but she tries out for the basketball team although she can only play for half the month and is too weak to play for the other and when she otherwise tries not to stand out at school. Then, all of a sudden, her uncle decides to change his life, and she decides to stop trying to blend in–when she’s spent most of her life trying to do the opposite. I don’t think her habits of trying to hide for years could change so quickly. I do like how Llona decides to fight later. I love kickass heroines who taken action.
Christian was also confusing. It is obvious that he has feelings for Llona and is trying to protect her. However, he is harsh with her at times and nice other times. He isn’t honest with her, yet expects her to listen to him. As someone interested in her well-being, he doesn’t do a great job of it, though things get better later. Personally, I like Matt better (not that there was a love triangle there to begin with). Smart, cute guys that are knowledgeable about literature? Win.
I did like the mystery of the murders and the shadow outside Llona’s window. It was interesting and had me anticipating the appearance of the culprit, and the pace picks up later with Llona deciding to fight. Llona and Christian are still growing. With everything that has come out of the events of the novel, Fractured Light has set the foundation for the possibility of much more. I will be looking forward to the sequel.

Great review I really like this book cover! I also enjoy a good mystery but not sure about the characters since I'm a bit character oriented reader. But I'd like to give it a try it sounds original.

I've read stories where I didn't always like the characters and in the end I still liked the story. It's important that I can at least understand them and see where they are coming from.
