Eden didn’t expect Az.
Not his saunter down the beach toward her. Not his unbelievable pick up line. Not the instant, undeniable connection. And not his wings.
Yeah.
So long happily-ever-after.
Now trapped between life and death, cursed to spread chaos with her every touch, Eden could be the key in the eternal struggle between heaven and hell. All because she gave her heart to one of the Fallen, an angel cast out of heaven.
She may lose everything she ever had. She may be betrayed by those she loves most. But Eden will not be a pawn in anyone else’s game. Her heart is her own.
And that’s only the beginning of the end.
This book surprised me in many ways. Awkward start to a review, but it pretty much sums up how this book was for me. When I read the first chapters at the Harper Teen website (one of my favorite places to find new books), I didn’t think this book was going to be for me, but after attending a chat session with Leah Clifford, I was motivated to check this out again. And I’m glad that I did.
This story starts out slow, giving us the background story of how Eden comes into her role as a key player in the struggle between heaven and hell. The focus comes in later, when Eden finds herself on her own, struggling to survive with unique powers that make her alternately hunted, feared, and revered. It is a terrifying power if you think about it, and one that can’t be used lightly.
There are time skips, big and small, but Eden’s story plays out over a period of time. It takes time to develop, and living day-to-day as she is, the days tend to blend in together. It risks becoming overly drawn out, as Eden and her companions don’t seem to know exactly what they’re doing there, but that’s where Gabriel’s perspective comes in. He fills us in on things that Eden doesn’t know, can’t know, things that he’s just finding out about himself. The alternating perspective also give us a chance to get to know two distinct people with unique personalities.
Eden has a strange relationship with Az. At times, I see glimpses love she developed for him over the summer they met. Other times, I see how the two of them have changed since their parting. The two of them have gone through much pain and suffering. It is a beautiful, broken relationship, and if they can get over their past, it will be all the stronger for it.
Grave danger lies ahead for Eden and Az. They have lost important comrades, and they must fight to protect the ones that they have left and to retrieve what is precious to them. Eden must be more careful than ever when calling upon her abilities and in defending herself against those who would use her abilities for evil. A Touch Mortal takes a different tone in the paranormal department, and it has been a pleasant reading experience overall. I have received a review copy of A Touch Morbid and look forward to reading it!

I read somewhere that it starts with a suicide, but that doesn't overpower the rest of the story. I don't mind suicide-related books at all, I think they're interesting, but I'd like to see how it ties in with heaven and hell.

I haven't read it, but your review makes me want to:))
I like it when books and stories are complicated but you still get to know the characters.
