Brusenna thought it was finished.
She defeated the Dark Witch, saving the Haven Witches from imprisonment and death. She found love and a place to belong.
She was wrong.
Haven is not the sanctuary it appears to be. Even love is in danger of slipping away like water through cupped hands.
Some things can’t be saved.
A new threat merges with the old as the Witches’ dark history begins to catch up with them. Only Brusenna knows the extent of the danger and how to stop it, though doing so might cost her everything.
Including her life.
Will Brusenna be required to make the ultimate sacrifice?
Tell us a little about yourself and how you became an author.
I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but it was so important to me that I was afraid of failure. When my second son was born with colic, often crying for 16 hours a day, I had to find an outlet or lose my mind. Around the same time, I read my very first high fantasy novel and immediately the plotting gears started spinning in my mind. Writing became a huge stress relief for me.
What about the world in the Witch Song books attracts you the most?
The magic. My Witches sing to control nature, so their songs affect the storms, season, and plants. I’ve always wanted to be able to sing, but to sing like that . . . so cool.
I would love to be able to sing like that. I can’t even hold a tune. Brusenna has a gorgeous name. Where does it come from?
I started out with Senna, which I thought sounded pretty. But I wanted it to sound a bit more ‘witchy’ so I added brew (like a witch’s brew) and changed the spelling. Brew + Senna = Brusenna.
When making Brusenna’s character, what key characteristics did you want to incorporate within her?
I wanted someone that shy, self-conscious girls could relate to. Someone they could watch begin to trust herself and others as a way to lay out a pattern for them to follow a hero that they could see themselves in.
What dynamics went into the making of Brusenna and Joshen’s relationship?
I wanted a realistic relationship that didn’t start out as love at first sight, but grew from a mutual trust and friendship, the way a relationship should start out. As shy and apprehensive as Senna is, an immediately intense relationship wouldn’t have been realistic.
Both in love and character, Senna is someone that girls can relate to. If you were to create a tour guide for the world in Witch Song, what would some of the major stops be?
Haven is absolutely breathtaking in a run-down ruins sort of way. It’s surrounded on all sides by the ocean. High walls isolate the interior. Waterfalls are evenly spaced all along those cliffs. Worn carvings cover the faces. Inside, plants and trees are everywhere. The Witches make their homes out of hollow trees that they’ve sung into shape. Tarten is covered in high hill that cities are built upon (think a smaller version of Machu Picchu) and surrounded by jungle. Amazingly pretty.
What are you working on right now?
I’m working on a short prequel to Witch Song, entitled Witch Wars. I have another book, Winter Queen, for a different series, Fairy Queens, that we’re sending to copyedits soon. Both should come out next year. You can learn more about them on Goodreads.
Amber Argyle grew up with three brothers on a cattle ranch in the Rocky Mountains. She spent hours riding horses, roaming the mountains, and playing in her family’s creepy barn. This environment fueled her imagination for writing her debut novel. She received her bachelor’s degree in English and Physical Education from Utah State University and has worked as a short order cook, janitor, and staff member in a mental institution, all of which has given her great insight into the human condition and has made for some unique characters. Currently, she resides in Utah with her husband and three small children.
