I’m delighted to have author Celia C. Pérez join us on the blog today to share 10 bucket list items she’d love to do with her BFFs.
Strange Birds: A Field Guide to Ruffling Feathers by Celia C. PérezPublished by Kokila on September 3, 2019
Pages: 384
Format: Hardcover
From the award-winning author of The First Rule of Punk comes the story of four kids who form an alternative Scout troop that shakes up their sleepy Florida town.
When three very different girls find a mysterious invitation to a lavish mansion, the promise of adventure and mischief is too intriguing to pass up.
Ofelia Castillo (a budding journalist), Aster Douglas (a bookish foodie), and Cat Garcia (a rule-abiding birdwatcher) meet the kid behind the invite, Lane DiSanti, and it isn't love at first sight. But they soon bond over a shared mission to get the Floras, their local Scouts, to ditch an outdated tradition. In their quest for justice, independence, and an unforgettable summer, the girls form their own troop and find something they didn't know they needed: sisterhood.
Celia C. Pérez’s 10 Bucket List Items to do with Her BFFs
- Open a detective agency and solve mysteries.
- Start a podcast (we have a name and a list of segments and topics going already. Next,
some time and motivation!) - Build an off-the-grid commune (which may make the podcast thing a little challenging).
- Host a dance party fundraiser for a cause that is important to us.
- Write a joint memoir of our time as library school students in Florida.
- Finally get a Mister Softee together! A twist in a wafer cone with sprinkles for her, a
vanilla cherry dipped cone for me. She also wants to drive the truck which is fine. I’ll just
ride along and work the window since I don’t have a license. - Start a traveling library – bakery – fortunetelling – therapy mobile.
- Embark on an omusubii-eating world tour.
- Have a DIY train writing residency (possibly in conjunction with the North American leg
of our omusubi tour). - Start a pit bull sanctuary. This is really on my bucket list, but I know she’s up for it.
5 Reasons to Read Her Book
- It features a sisterhood. Friendship is something that I would love to see more in books.
- It’s an #ownvoices book written by the daughter of a Mexican mother and a Cuban father.
- It promises adventure and mischief, two things about which I loved reading as a child.
- It has a summer vibe (well, it is set during the summer).
- The premise of the mysterious invitation intrigues me. It’s like something that would come out of a Nancy Drew book.

Hahaha I love #1 – open a detective agency and solve mysteries!! That is one I want to do with my BFF. She loves mysterious and I watch all the ones she loves, its our thing. I think we’d make excellent detectives. At least the murderer always seems obvious when we watch it in shows. 😉

#1 sounds like so much fun! (In my head, I’m thinking of one along the vein of the Boxcar Children or Nancy Drew . . . something unofficial with a group of good friends. Not one from an adult mystery/thriller!!) Shows do tend to get predictable when you’ve watched enough of them or read enough books!! 🙂

Actually doing no. 1 would be fun. I haven’t actually written down my bucket list, need to remedy that.

No. 1 does sound like fun! I need to make a bucket list too!
